Lyn Brown MP has written to the foreign secretary to demand that he “give the country the truth” about the killing of 550 people in India in 1984.

The West Ham MP’s letter to William Hague follows the release of documents last month that suggest British involvement in the three day Indian military operation thirty years ago in the city of Amritsar - site of a famous massacre by British colonial troops in 1919.

Mrs Brown called for the full disclosure of documents relating to the killings.

She said: “While I am pleased the Government announced a review, serious questions still remain.

“I regret that the government refused to accept calls for all the documentation to be published, and I would welcome the documents being brought into the light of public scrutiny.

She added: “I have asked Mr. Hague a number of questions about British involvement and the full nature of British military participation. I sincerely hope he answers my questions and gives the country the truth about Amritsar.’
