Lorries and buses, along with drilling from Crossrail works, are causing vibrations like an “earthquake” inside buildings.

Pensioner Anthony Vickery, of Holt Road, is upset as the Crossrail work is causing disturbing vibrations in his house.

That is according to residents in Holt Road, who say massive lorries are hurtling down their road because of diversions at Albert Road relating to Crossrail.

Retired caretaker Anthony Vickery said: “Hundreds of lorries are ignoring the restriction signs and going down our road day and night. We never get any sleep.

“It creaks and feels like an earthquake with the whole house vibrating every time the traffic goes by and pictures are moving off the wall.”

He said buses have been diverted down their road from Albert Road because of construction work, related to Cross Rail, adding to the problem.

At Brick Lane Music Hall, which is housed inside a restored church from 1865 in North Woolwich Road, its theatre director Vincent Hayes is also worried about his building.

Mr Hayes said: “The building is vibrating from the drilling and I’m worried about the damage.

“Crossrail have not been pro-active in dealing with residents and businesses, and trying to avert the problems.

“Buffer boards could have been put up to reduce noise and there is a lot of dirt from the work which should be dealt with better.

“We turn the music up during quiet passages in the play as otherwise people cannot hear for the drilling. But the show must go on.”

A Crossrail spokesman said they are working hard to keep any disruption to an “absolute minimum” and will “thoroughly” investigate the complaints.

He said: “Signposts are already in place directing lorry drivers to the Woolwich Ferry around the north of the docks – however, once the new traffic management system is in place at the start of April, lorries disregarding the signs will no longer need to use Holt Road and will remain on Albert Road.

“We have also been using a daily road sweeper service and are doing everything we can to reduce noise. In the unlikely event of any ground movement causing damage to property we will carry out repairs in line with our commitments.”
