A state-of-the-art polyclinic housing some of the most sophisticated medical equipment to treat thousands of athletes during the Olympics has been unveiled.

The main polyclinic in Stratford features world-class healthcare facilities and can treat 200 athletes daily.

The services will be provided by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) in conjunction with its official healthcare partner, and worldwide sponsor of the London 2012 Olympic Games, GE.

The main Polyclinic is in the Athletes’ Village within the Olympic Park in Stratford in a state-of-the-art building that will provide up to 16,000 Olympic athletes and team officials and 6,200 Paralympic athletes and team officials with access to excellent healthcare services. It will be open 24 hours a day.

Core services will be delivered by a team of 10 LOCOG staff, 500 Games Makers and 80 on-call specialists. They will include sports medicine, imaging, physical therapies including physiotherapy, dentistry, optometry, podiatry, an in-house pharmacy and primary care services supported by a broad range of on-call specialists.

Its emergency department will be open 24-hours-a-day and will provide out of hours emergency services from 11pm until 7am.

Equipment housed in the Polyclinic is among some of the most sophisticated medical equipment currently available in the UK. GE Healthcare technologies featured include MRI scanners as well as ECG diagnosis machines to monitor, analyse and interpret heart rhythms.

After the Games the Polyclinic will be taken over by the NHS and re-opened as a state-of-the-art healthcare facility for the new community coming to live in East Village and residents of Newham and neighbouring boroughs.
