Learning to grow food at West Ham Park

Young and old spent time at West Ham Park learning about growing food.

It was part of a Jubilee Food Growing Garden planting day organised by the City of London Corporation to involve the local community. It was part of its new Jubilee Food Growing Garden at West Ham Park.

A group of about 30 children and adults planted cabbages, cauliflowers, potatoes, tomatoes and salad, all in various sizes of containers to show how food can be grown in even the smallest of spaces in a sustainable way.

The day’s activities were led by Sue Banks who is the City of London Corporation’s Support Officer at West Ham Park and deals with outreach, sustainability and biodiversity.

It also served to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee.

The park has developed an irrigation system that uses water from a ground water bore hole so is flying the flag for a green way to grow vegetables in our new food growing area. In addition, a sensor detects whether it has rained so the irrigation system does not activate to water the plants.

The Jubilee Food Garden was part funded by a £17,000 grant from the City Bridge Trust, the City of London Corporation’s charitable arm.
