A service will be hosted by Newham Council on Friday January 25 in the Main Hall from 10am to 11am to promote unity among Newham’s diverse population.

West Ham United chairman David Gold will lead the way in lighting the candles along with University College London academic Professor Michael Berkowitz, the Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales, and MPs Stephen Timms and Lyn Brown.

Prof Berkowitz, a specialist in modern Jewish history, will give a speech entitled “Communities Together: Build a Bridge” and pupils from Rokeby School in Canning Town will read John Donne’s poem ‘No Man is an Island’ followed by music and refreshments.

Sir Robin Wales said: “We must never forget the lessons from the past and must strengthen our resolve to tackle all forms of discrimination of which the Holocaust was the worst kind.

“I am proud of the fact that this is the most diverse borough in the country but one that is united, as the incredible summer of 2012 showed.

“But we must never be complacent. We must be vigilant and stand together against intolerance and hatred. I hope you are able to join me on January 25.”
