East Ham MP Stephen Timms has expressed his “disappointment” about the proposed closure of the Acute Day Hospital in Plaistow after meeting with health trust bosses.

The service, which provides an alternative to hospital admission, could be axed under current plans by health provider East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT).

ELFT believes that sufficient care could be provided by the home treatment team in Newham and has been consulting users and carers about the planned change.

Mr Timms met with the trust’s chair, Marie Gabriel, and Dr Dudley Manns, the clinical director for Newham, to talk about the proposal last week.

He said: “It seemed clear that - to my great regret - the closure will go ahead.

“Although this is disappointing for users, Marie and Dudley assured me that individual care plans would be drawn up for each individual who is using the hospital at present, after a one-to-one discussion with each, and that new services would be introduced to fill the gap.

“I am disappointed with this outcome but will be pressing the trust to ensure they follow through with their discussions with users.“

A spokeswoman for ELFT added: “The trust had a very constructive meeting with the Rt Hon Stephen Timms and sought to reassure him about his concerns.

“We explained that the new service will include the most valuable elements of the Acute Day Hospital within an enhanced, improved home treatment service.

“We welcome the really useful feedback from the MP, service users and carers received during the consultation and will keep on listening.”

She added that the trust are still considering responses and will be writing to staff and patients in due course.
