Have your say on new, car-free Canning Town

PUBLISHED: 10:47 30 August 2013 | UPDATED: 10:47 30 August 2013

Residents can help shape a new car-free town centre for Canning Town and have their say on new shops and homes.

A consultation is being held next week to gather public opinion surrounding the Hallsville Quarter, the second phase of the £3.7bn Canning Town and Custom House regeneration programme.

The scheme hopes to create a new town centre by reconnecting Canning Town Corner with Barking Road and Rathbone Market to the north.

Developers envision the Hallsville Quarter will be a mixed-use development with around 335 new homes for private sale and rent.

These residential units will be located around private, communal squares and gardens with internal courtyards.

Bouygues Development is creating the Hallsville Quarter in partnership with Newham Council and One Housing Group who plan to pedestrianse the town centre so shoppers can walk around freely.

The space would also include “a mix of modern shops and attractive, lively public spaces” and restuarants on the ground floor, a 200-bedroom hotel, and a community health centre, with a car park at basement level.

The community consultation event is being held at The Place in Silvertown Way, opposite Canning Town Tube station on Friday (Sep 6) from 3pm to 8pm and Saturday (Sep 7) from 10am to 2pm.

A planning application is due to be submitted by the end of the year.
