New employment figures have been hailed as showing the borough is headed in “the right direction”.

The number of people in Newham claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance in 2016 fell by 190 compared with last year, the data – which were released this morning – show.

The Department for Work and Pensions figures reveal that 4,570 people were claiming the benefit in September of this year, a 4 per cent decrease on September 2015.

Separate numbers for residents aged between 18 and 24 show a 7pc decline, from 950 in 2015 to 880 this year.

Mark Creasey, Jobcentre customer service operations manager representing Newham, said the figures are welcome news.

“The numbers in Newham remain positive,” he said, adding the borough is “heading in the right direction” with employment.

“Employment rates across the country continue to run at a record high.”

Overall, 31.8 million are now employed in the UK, with 4,469,000 of them in London.

Unemployment is at 1.66 million, while the number of job vacancies available at any one time is around 750,000.

Employment minister Damian Hinds said: “There’s great news in London where the employment rate is close to the record high at 73.3pc.

“But there’s more to do, particularly when it comes to supporting young people into employment. We want to build a solid base for the future.”
