Stark figures released by a charity that helps elderly people tell the tale of a lonely existence for some individuals.

According to statistics by Age UK, around half a million older people in the UK will be spending their Christmas alone, with one in 10 of those 65 or over claiming that they are always, or often, feel lonely.

In addition, almost half of all older people consider the TV to be their main form of company.

This paints a sorry picture of life but at the Recorder, we want to help put an end to this.

This week saw the start of the Recorder’s campaign for Good Neighbours this Christmas, and Independent Age are latest group to support us.

Victoria Richards, head of advice and support at the charity, said: “Christmas is a time for getting together and spending time with friends and family.

“The Recorder’s Good Neighbours initiative is a great opportunity to help out an elderly neighbour who may be alone this Christmas. If you know someone who is lonely or if you are feeling lonely yourself, there are a number of things you could try which may help.

“If you feel nervous, then try one thing at a time while you build up your confidence.

“You could try sharing your skills and time with others by helping out in your street, neighbourhood or with local organisations.

“If you feel very lonely, then speak to your GP, who should be able to direct you to local services.

“If you struggle to get out and about, Independent Age, as well as other charities, offers telephone friendship services as well as one-to-one befriending.”
