Councillor Alec Kellaway worked tirelessly for the people in his community


The funeral of a councillor who spent 27 years working to improve the lives of his community will be held tomorrow in Beckton.

The family of Beckton ward Cllr Alec Kellaway, who died recently after a short illness, have arranged for his funeral to be held at St Mark’s Church, Tollgate Road. It will be followed by a Service of Committal at the City of London Cemetery.

There will also be a community memorial service at the same church on Friday August 1 at 7.30pm.

Cllr Kellaway, 61, asked that there be no flowers or cards, but donations be made to his nominated charity, St Mark’s Church, Beckton. The funds will go towards youth work among local schools.

Cllr Kellaway was an economist and market researcher by profession and was first elected to Newham Council in 1987 when he represented the Social Democratic Party Liberal Alliance.

He was re-elected in South Ward as a Liberal Democrat in 1990 and 1994 and as a Labour Party councillor in 1998. He represented Beckton Ward as a Labour councillor from 2002. He was famous for making cakes for meetings and hot food for lunches at St Mark’s Church.
