Helen Page, vice-president of the Forest Gate Women’s Institute (FGWI), made the donation at Community Links’ headquarters in Barking Road, Canning Town, last week to help support the worthy cause.

The presents were collected at the group’s December craft meeting where visitors brought gifts to donate.

Ms Page said: “This is the third year we have done a shoe box collection as part of our ongoing charity work. We usually do it for a women’s refuge centre but this year we donated it to Community Links.

“It does such fine work in Newham and reach out to all corners of the borough.”

She added: “We mostly have families of our own and we’re conscious of the importance of caring for all children at this time of year.”

The FGWI also holds monthly cake sales in Forest Gate Market to raise money for charity.

Kevin Jenkins, co-founder of Community Links, thanked the FGWI for its contribution, and called on everyone to redouble their efforts for the last stretch of the campaign.

He said: “The response has been terrific this year and everyone has made an extra effort to help ensure that no child referred to the Appeal this year will wake up on Christmas morning to an empty Christmas stocking”.
