Olympic Torchbearer Sandeep Channa presents £250 to Central Park Primary School.

Five schools went head-to-head in Stratford on Saturday in a live cook off to find the next Jamie Oliver.

Winners of the secondary school category Safiyyah Ilyas Oughradar and Urvashi Gulabchande from Sarah Bonnell School cooking a Chinese Chow Mein.

Cooking up a storm in the Stratford Shopping Centre were pupils from Carpenters school, Rokeby school, Central Park Primary, Royal Docks school and Sarah Bonnell school who teamed up with chefs from Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food Stratford.

Learning how to make dishes popular in countries competing in the Olympic Games, the primary school and overall winners of the challenge were Hannah Iqbal and Humaira Ahad, both 10-years-old, from Central Park Primary School who rustled up an Italian Tuna Pasta.

They won vouchers for JD Sports and £250 for their school to spend on cooking equipment or sporting facilities.

Safiyyah Ilyas Oughradar and Urvashi Gulabchande from Sarah Bonnell School won the secondary school prize with their Chinese Chow Mein.

Andew Norton, Stratford Shopping Centre Manager, said: “The event was a great success and we have already received lots of positive feedback.

“It was wonderful to see the children proudly show off their new cooking skills following the training received by Jamie’s Ministry of Food Stratford.

“Not only has the experience provided the competitors with life long skills but it has raised awareness of other cultures and traditions.

“We hope that this will be the start of more events hosted by Stratford Shopping Centre to engage with the local community.”

Judging the children’s culinary efforts were Sandeep Channa, a local Olympic Torchbearer, and an audience of local councillors, community figures and Newham residents.
