Work is set to begin on a £141m development in the Royal Docks - complete with riverside bar.

The first phase of Great Eastern Quays will get underway imminently following developer Notting Hill Housing’s appointment of Galliford Try Partnerships.

Phase one will include the construction of 350 one to four bedroom homes, 44 per cent of which will be affordable housing, as well as commercial space, much of which will be aimed at business start ups.

The design of the development aims to reflect the heritage of the docks in both form and scale while protecting features such as a 100 year old impounded pumping station which will be preserved onsite.

The completed project include 819 new homes, a restaurant bar and retail and business space.

Internal garden squares and a public realm along the river and docks are also planned as part of the regenerations.

Kate Davies, chief executive of Notting Hill Housing, said: “Playing our part within the largest urban regeneration project in western Europe will indelibly shape the place and create more quality homes across the capital.

“We are investing heavily in what we believe will become a major new centre for homes, business and leisure in east London.”

Akay Zorlu, associate director of the development’s concept architect, Maccreanor Lavington, added: “This is a very exciting project to be involved with. Working with NHH, who have a long-term commitment to the area, has allowed us to develop interesting new housing types and a variety of characteristic public spaces.

“We felt it was important to create something special where the Royal Docks meet the Thames and a place unique to this area of London.”
