Emergency fire crews swung into action in east London during a 90-minute daring rescue 50ft above the street.

A passer-by dialled 999 outside the Newham Hotel in Romford Road, Forest Gate, and the first crew rushed from East Ham Fire station two miles away.

A second crew with a special turntable aerial ladder also had to be mobilised from Tottenham in north London before the rescue could be attempted.

Eventually firefighter Paul Milton was able to scale the ladder—to rescue a black and white cat!

“We had to wait for an hour for the turntable ladder to arrive before we could reach to distressed animal,” firefighter Milton explained. “Someone in the street spotted it trapped on a tree branch outside the hotel. We always mobilise to rescue an animal in distress.”

People in the street applauded as he carefully brought the ‘Postman Pat’ pet look-alike down to safety.

The moggy, which didn’t have a nametag, was put down in a front-garden nearby where it was last seen scampering off—without so much as a ‘thank-you’ to its rescuers.
