Forman & Son MD Lance Forman is concerned that Remainers are in top government positions

CARMEN VALINO ALL RIGHTS - on shift

A couple of days after the referendum, once David Cameron had resigned, but before anyone else had put their name forward to be prime minister, I was interviewed on CNBC news. The final question I was asked, was who I thought should be the new leader of the Conservative Party.

I didn’t commit to who should be leader, but I did say that it couldn’t be a Remainer and that it also couldn’t be Theresa May as she had been silent throughout the campaign, and “silence is not leadership”.

Fast forward a few weeks and Theresa May became PM. There was talk of her silence as being simply a desire to remain loyal to David Cameron but that she was a secret Remainer. Like many others in the Leave campaign, we gave her the benefit of the doubt and her insistence that Brexit meant Brexit was an indication that she would be resolute in ensuring the will of the people would be carried through.

Fast forward a few months and now I am concerned. My instinct then that the leader should have been a declared Leaver is starting to rekindle. Three of the highest offices in government, namely prime minster, chancellor and home secretary are being run by Remainers and they simply don’t seem to get why people voted to leave the EU. Remainers believe people voted principally because of immigration and are now proposing discriminatory policies because they think that’s what leavers wanted.

Let me be very clear. We don’t!

Brexit is a golden opportunity for Britain, not a punishment, and we should be excited about our prospects.

What we want is an economy that is growing and the best way to achieve that is through low taxes, less red tape and free trade with countries across the globe – everything membership of the EU has failed to deliver. When the economy is going well, people don’t start looking for scapegoats. More from Lance
