Stratford car park roof could be transformed into “pocket park”

PUBLISHED: 10:57 04 April 2014 | UPDATED: 10:57 04 April 2014

A rooftop of a Stratford car park could be transformed into a pocket park.

Urban Space Management want to convert the disused space on top of the Stratford Multi-Storey Car Park into a venue which could host a range of cultural and creative events including film screenings, plays and other performances.

The park, which would also include a cafe and bar, would have stunning views over the capital and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

If the application is approved by the council next month, the venue would open later this year.

Urban Space Management’s plans come after Newham Council ran a competition to find a new use for the rooftop to strengthen the town centre after the 2010 Stratford Metropolitan Masterplan identified it as suitable for alternative use.

The project has received £25,000 from the Mayor of London’s pocket park programme and £25,000 match funding from Stratford Renaissance Partnership. Urban Space Management would also contribute to the cost of converting the site.

The company has more than 40 years experience in similar projects and has previously revamped Elephant and Castle shopping centre and regenerated Camden Lock and Bishopsgate Goods Yard.

Councillor Conor McAuley, executive member for regeneration and strategic planning encouraged residents to put forward their views on the proposals.

“If this project is approved it has the potential to be an exciting development which could add to our existing leisure offer,” he added.

Opportunities for volunteering and job for local people would also be created as part of the transformation of the site.
