There are eight schools in the borough exceeding legal air pollution limits, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has revealed.

Figures released by City Hall today show four primaries and four secondaries in Newham are among 443 schools in the capital suffering from “dangerously polluted air”.

The London Academy of Excellence, in Stratford High Street; School 21, in Chant Street; Deanery Road’s Sarah Bonnell School; and Rokeby School, in Barking Road, are the four secondaries affected.

Of the four primaries, only one – Keir Hardie Primary School, in Robertson Road – is named in the data, with the other three not ranking in the list of the worst 100.

Last month Mr Khan released figures he claimed the previous mayor, Boris Johnson, had suppressed that showed deprived schools were disproportionately affected by toxic air.

The mayor also cited research showing close to 10,000 Londoners die every year because of poor quality air.

“These figures are of great concern and show why it is absolutely right we act now on London’s polluted air,” Mr Khan said.

“It is simply not acceptable that young Londoners – our children, grandchildren, family, neighbours and friends – are being exposed to dangerously polluted air and putting them at greater risk of respiratory and other conditions.”

He added that the figures are evidence Mr Johnson “failed Londonders” on air quality.

“I have been clear that I will not stand by and continue to let that happen and that is why I am more determined than ever to get to grips with tackling the capital’s toxic air pollution and delivering on a promise of cleaner air for all Londoners,” he said.

Meanwhile Cllr Ian Corbett, mayoral adviser for environment and leisure, said bad air quality is a “significant public health issue”.

“We are extremely disappointed that this report was not published in 2013,” he said.

“We are doing all we can to improve air quality in the borough, our air quality action plan sets out how we will work towards meeting national air quality objectives for nitrogen dioxide and fine particulates. We are reviewing and updating this document to ensure it reflects current activity.

“However we can not achieve these objectives alone. We look forward to working with the new mayor for London to tackle pollution levels across our borough and the capital as a whole.”

Tower Hamlets, Westminster and Southwark are the worst affected in London, with the latter having 55 schools exceeding legal limits.
