Two A-level students at Newham Sixth Form College have been offered places at Oxford University for September 2014.

If successful, they will join five fellow students who are studying at Oxford and Cambridge. This follows on last year’s big increase in the number of NewVIc students progressing to highly selective Russell group universities.

Rumana Ali and Gerda Kildisiute are in their final year of A-levels at NewVIc, in Prnce Regent Lane in Plaistow, and have been offered places to study degrees in history and biology respectively.

Rumana Ali, a former Plashet school pupil, is the first of her family to go to university and has been offered a place at St. Hilda’s College, Oxford University, to study history. She said: “I remember seeing a leaflet about NewVIc students when I was at school and one student had achieved three A*s and an A at the college, before going to Cambridge. This really inspired me.”

Gerda Kildisiute, 19, was born and grew up in Lithuania. She has been offered a place at Merton College, Oxford University, to study biology.

Gerda said: “I’m really happy as I have wanted to go to Oxford since I was at school. My teachers at NewVIc were really patient with the fact that English is not my first language and were very supportive. I was amazed at how much attention every single student receives - that wasn’t something I experienced before.”

Eddie Playfair, Principal, said: “Gerda and Rumana’s success and our very high progression rate to university – 99 per cent of A-level applicants and 91 per cent overall – are a result of the hard work and dedication of all our staff and students.”

Both are on the NewVIc Honours programme, which provides a tailored curriculum, additional guidance and specialised support for progression. The college also has close links with Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, King’s College, Queen Mary and many other Russell Group universities. Last year, 767 students progressed to university, with 130 students gaining places at the most selective universities, including 60 at Russell Group universities.
