Two exceptional New VIc students are swapping Newham for Oxford University.

Rumana Ali and Gerda Kildisiute, both from Upton Park, will begin studying History and Biology respectively at the hallowed halls from next month.

Rumana, 18, who achieved an A* in History, A* in English Literature and A in Government and Politics, said: “I’m really excited. I’ve always wanted to go there [Oxford] since I was in year six but I didn’t think it was possible until I got my results.”

Gerda, who achieved three As in Biology, Chemistry and Maths, has lived on her own since moving to the UK from Lithuania.

The 19-year-old admitted that it has been difficult to juggle studying around her other commitments but hopes it will help her in the future.

“I think I have got an advantage on other students because I am used to living on my own,” Gerda added.

Ninety-six per cent of students at New VIc achieved A* to E grades (up two per cent on last year), with a third receiving A* to B grades (up five per cent).

Headteacher Eddie Playfair said: “I am particularly pleased that we achieved such excellence while remaining a comprehensive college for everyone.

“Everyone has worked extremely hard for these results.”
