East London Humanists to discuss religious freedom vs the secular state

Saturday, January 26, 2013

A leading lawyer with civil liberties group Liberty will lead a discussion at the January monthly meeting of East London Humanists.

Corinna Ferguson, who has been involved in a number of cases which concern religious freedom in the workplace, will lead the talk on religious freedom versus the secular state.

There are several cases are currently awaiting a decision in the European Court and raise difficult and controversial questions.

For example, should a registrar be allowed to discriminate by refusing to conduct a civil partnership on grounds of faith? Should a hotel be allowed to discriminate against gay couples for similar reasons? Should there be any limit on religious symbols or clothing which can be worn?

Entry to the public meeting on January 28 in the Churchill Room at Wanstead Library at 7.30pm is free. There will be a book stall. Light refreshments will be available.
