East London Flower Show hailed a success

Organisers of a flower show in Newham have declared the event, held for the first time, a huge success.

Some 30 gardeners took part in the East London Flower Show held during the weekend at Newham City Farm in Stansfeld Road, Beckton.

Billed as the first flower show for Londoners in London, it is was organised by The East London Garden Society with categories for community garden display, individual foraging display as well as largest vegetables, fresh and dry flower arranging and children’s classes which incorporate biscuit tin gardens and wildflower necklaces.

One of its members, East Ham MP Stephen Timms presented winners with their cups.

Geoff Juden, chair of the East London Garden Society, expressed his gratitude to Kevin Jenkins, co-founder of Community Links for his support and giving them a venue at which to stage the event.

Geoff said he was so pleased with the entries that he is already looking forward to next year’s event.

He was particularly impressed at an entry called Urban Wilderness by Jacquie Parker for a garden in First Avenue in Plaistow. Jean McQuaid, from Custom House won third prize in the Best Garden in East London Category.
