A resident of a temporary accommodation hostel in Stratford has scooped the top prize in a digital contest for her documentary on transgender.

As part of the competition Amina Gray, 20, made the documentary “Just Jay” which was screened to professionals in the television and film industry.

It focuses on Amina’s transgender cousin Jay and the issues he has faced as he becomes a man.

“I wanted to raise awareness about the transgender society, having a family member who was willing to share his story,” Amina said.

“I was really surprised to have won the whole competition though,” she added.

Amina wanted to shine the light on transgender to inspire those who may have experienced the same issues as her cousin.

She says she wants to continue to document Jay’s transition and “raise more awareness through the use of the film.”

East Thames’ Focus E15 Foyer in Stratford provides temporary accommodation and support to 210 young people at risk of homelessness.

A number of E15 residents joined other youngsters entering the competition.

The entrants were put through their paces learning the skills needed to transform the way they use the internet.

The project was called Digital Disruption and provided the young participants with skills, knowledge and understanding of the digital world.
