Baroness Doreen Lawrence, OBE and human rights lawyer Imran Khan delivered passionate public lectures to a packed audience at the University of East London.
Their lectures highlighted continuing concerns about undercover policing, spying and corruption allegations.
Speaking about the murder of her son Stephen Lawrence in 1993, Baroness Lawrence recalled the night she learnt of his murder and the personal ordeal that followed her and her family as they fought to bring his killers to justice.
Baroness Lawrence said: “There has never been any definitive answer to what happened in 1993.
“Many people do not understand the difficulty and struggles we as a family have had to go through, the challenges that there were. The police, justice system... have had to make a lot of changes since 1993 and Stephen’s murder. Public lectures like this are important as the public have no idea how the law works until they are in it themselves”
The lectures, which took place in June, were the latest of several high profile events which are part of UEL’s influential “Know the Law” series.
Stephen Lawrence was murdered in a racist attack while waiting for a bus in south London. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Macpherson Report, which first introduced the term “institutional racism” to policing in the UK, into Stephen’s murder.
The publication of the Ellison Review this year has disclosed further revelations that during the investigation of Stephen’s murder, a police officer spied on the Lawrence family. The Home Secretary has now ordered a judicial public inquiry into undercover policing.
UEL re-launched its Law Clinic, at its new home in University Square Stratford in November 2013 with lawyer Imran Khan, a former law student at UEL then becoming the Patron of the clinic.
The ‘Know the Law’ lecture series will take place throughout the year at UEL’s new £33million campus in the heart of Stratford, with further high profile speakers to be announced. For more information visit, uel.ac.uk/lawclinic
