Dame Barbara Windsor traded the fictional east London for the real one when she paid a visit to Caritas Anchor House.

The actress, best known for her roles in EastEnders and the Carry On films, met residents at the Canning Town homeless charity, of which she is a patron, on Tuesday.

She said: “It is with great pride that I support Caritas Anchor House and I was thrilled to see the progress being made in the building of new accommodation flats to help the homeless.

“The warmth and community feeling within the building is inspirational and we must not forget the importance of such a place for people who find themselves falling on hard times.”

Chief executive Keith Fernett said: “All of our residents were delighted to meet with Dame Barbara Windsor, and her words of encouragement inspired them all.”
