The first neighbourhood to open in the Olympic Park will have its own garden display at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show.

East Village - previously the Athlete’s Village - will bring the horticultural wonders of the east to the west as one of three shows selected and presented by the Royal Horticultural Society to launch the annual event at a press conference.

Sponsored by joint owner Delancey, the East Village garden was designed by landscape architect Michael Balston and Marie-Louise Agius.

Michael said: “When I visited East Village for the first time I was struck by the amount of public and private green space and the attention that had been given to creating balconies, gardens, wetlands, orchards and parks that were full of plants, trees, colour and water.

“It will undoubtedly bring great pleasure to residents and was fundamental to the inspiration behind the East Village garden.”

The design also aims to draw on aspects of local history and environment to create a work grounded in Stratford and its “renaissance” over the last 5 years.

East Village says the garden has an urban feel, characterised by materials including timber, glass and steel which resonate with the contemporary design and construction of the neighbourhood.

But the garden is also heavily plant orientated, filled with drifts of herbaceous plants, shrub borders and mature trees creating a juxtaposition of ‘urban’ and ‘green’.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show, celebrating its centenary in 2013, is an annual event in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea attended by 157,000 visitors.
