Jurors in the trial of alleged acid attacker Mary Konye have retired to consider their verdict today.

Konye, 21, is accused of dousing her childhood friend Naomi Oni, also 21, in concentrated sulphuric acid as the Victoria’s Secret shop assistant walked home from work along Lodge Avenue, Dagenham, in the early hours of December 30, 2012.

She has repeatedly denied the charges against her, telling the court that the pair had planned the attack together in order to win fame and fortune from media interest in the case — using the story of disfigured model Katie Piper as a “reference”.

Ms Oni, who has been left with severe facial scarring, refuted claims she plotted to throw acid on herself and instead said she was the victim of an attack masterminded by Konye, of Throckmorton Road, Canning Town.

The jury of eight men and four women heard a summing up of the case by prosecutor Gareth Patterson and defence counsel Sally O’Neill at Snaresbrook Crown Court.

They were sent out after a final summary from Judge David Radford earlier today and are expected to return a final verdict in the coming days.

Konye denies applying corrosive fluid with intent to disfigure, maim or cause grievous bodily harm.
