‘Fake’ baliffs trick their way into pensioner’s home in Manor Park

Police are looking for three men who forced their way into pensioners home in Manor Park by pretending to be baliffs.

Officers were called to a multi-occupancy home in Sibley Grove at 3pm last Sunday (Jan 6) where they found a 68-year-old man suffering from a minor injury after the suspects forced their way into his home and stole his possessions.

The victim was watching television when three men entered his room all saying they were bailiffs.

He was immediately suspicious and asked them to leave the property, noticing a further three waiting in the corridor.

A short altercation took place but the suspects entered the room and rifled through his belongings taking a black Samsung Wave Y mobile phone, two vectone mobile phone top-up cards, and an Argos carrier bag containing an assortment of camera leads and mobile phone chargers before leaving the property.

During the incident, the victim called out to a housemate in the room next door who chased the men from the property and saw them drive off towards High Street North, East Ham, in a silver Vauxhall Astra.

The suspects are all described as black men, aged between 30 to 40-years-old, wearing dark clothing and hooded tops.

PC Andy Whitfield, Crime Prevention Design Advisor, said: “While most callers to your home are genuine, there are those who are not and you need to be cautious and consider taking precautions to prevent these ‘bogus callers’ getting into your home.

“You may feel it is rude to refuse entry to someone, but remember it is your doorstep, therefore, your decision.

“Criminals using false identities to try and get into your home to steal are known as ‘distraction burglars’ or ‘bogus callers’.”

Anyone with information about the men should call non-emergency number 101.
