East London man Richard Patterson, from Romford, has been jailed for raping a teenager in an alleyway in East Ham and sexually assaulting a woman.

Patterson, of North Street, was convicted yesterday at Basildon Crown Court where he was sentenced to six years.

He was arrested in 2004 for raping a 19-year-old in an alley off Barking Road, East Ham.

The victim did not wish to go ahead with a prosecution at the time and the case was dropped.

But in 2007, the victim contacted police because she felt that she wanted justice and provided a detailed account. It was decided at the time that there was insufficient evidence to proceed and the case was dropped.

In May 2012, a woman in her 30s, alleged that she had been sexually assaulted by Richard Patterson.

The development led officers to make contact with the 19-year-old again and bring a successful prosecution.
