A dispersal zone has been set up in Stratford to help curb anti-social behaviour.

The order gives police and police community support officers the power to disperse groups from the area for up to 24 hours where there are reasonable grounds to believe that their presence or behaviour has resulted or is likely to result in a member of the public being harrassed, intimidated, alarmed or distressed.

The zone, which came into force on Monday, has been introduced by the council and police in response to calls from residents and businesses.

The dispersal zone extends to Manbey Park Road in the north, Water Lane and Vicarage Lane in the east and Densham Road in the south.

Areas covered include Stratford Centre, Stratford Park, Meridian Square, Broadway and High Street, including the library and courthouse, Great Eastern Road and the precincts of Stratford bus station.

Police officers funded by Newham Council and council enforcement officers will help to enforce the initiative which lasts until 11.59pm on October 6.

Anyone who fails to a dispersal order can be punished by up to three months imprisonment and/or a fine of up to £2,500 under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003,

Superintendent Ian Larnder, from Newham Police, said: “People have a right to feel safe in their community, and it is unacceptable that anybody should feel threatened by groups causing a nuisance. Working in partnership with Newham Council we are taking a tough stance on anti-social behaviour.”

Councillor Unmesh Desai, Cabinet member for crime and anti-social behaviour, said: “We have a zero tolerance approach to crime and anti-social behaviour.

“This dispersal zone is an example of excellent partnership with police and it is good news for residents and businesses who tell us safety remains a priority for them.”
