Convicted burglar went back to old tricks after failure to deport

A prolific burglar who returned to stealing after being granted early release from prison should not have even been in the country.

Roger Kwiek, 30, was sent to jail for 44 months after being convicted of 98 burglaries in 2010, but he was freed 28 months early on the condition that he be deported.

However, when Polish-born Kweik’s release in September 2011 was followed by a rise in burglaries in Forest Gate and Stratford, officers began to think that it could be no coincidence.

Enquires were carried out with the UK Border Agency and the Ministry of Justice, who confirmed that Kwiek had been on the early release scheme and part of his conditions were that he was the subject of a deportation order. Further intelligence led Newham Crime Squad squad to arrest Kwiek, of no fixed address, in Station Road, Forest Gate, on May 4.

His presence in the UK despite the deportation order means the remaining 28 months of his previous sentence will now be served at a London prison.

On completion of his jail term, Kwiek will be escorted back to Poland.

Det Con Tim Campen said: “With Kwiek back in prison, we fully expect the residential burglaries in E15 and E7 to drop dramatically.

“We will always act on information that enables us to put prolific burglars like Kwiek back in prison.”
