Joaquim Diogo, 35, of Barking Road, punched and slapped Natalie Barry before grabbing her by the neck, throwing her to the floor and stamping on her ribs.

Inner London Crown Court heard a row began on February 17 when Ms Barry wanted to go out. Diogo wanted her to stay at home and look after their three children.

He accused her of being a bad mother before striking a number of blows. She then managed to flee with the children.

Prosecutor Rebecca Faulkes said Diogo had been cautioned for beating Ms Barry in December 2010. He had accused her of having an affair.

In March 2011 he beat her again, watched by one of the children through tears. He was convicted and sentenced to 20 weeks in jail for that.

Sentencing Diogo for the new offence, Judge Roger Chapple said: “Domestic violence is an altogether loathsome phenomenon. It involves a dreadful abuse of power and an abuse of trust.”

Diogo admitted assault causing actual bodily harm.

He is also subject to a restraining order not to contact Ms Barry or the children.
