Last Tues (Nov 27), the 87-year-old man was returning from the Barking Road post office where he had withdrawn £500 in cash.

A black car drew up on Jutland Road at around 9.57am and the driver got out of the saloon to ask the man for directions.

Suddenly the suspect - described as a 20-year-old and of Eastern European appearance - reached into the victim’s jacket pocket and took the money before getting back in the car and driving off in an unknown direction.

PC Andy Whitfield, crime prevention design advisor, said: “To prevent yourself from becoming victim of this crime, do not be tempted to carry large sums of money.

“It is safer and more secure to make large purchases with a bank card.

“But however if it is your preference then I recommend that money however large or small should always be carried on your person in an inside pocket that can be sealed as should your coat.

“If you do make a large withdrawal consider taking a family member or friend.

“If you do make a large withdrawal consider taking a family member. If you should find yourself face to face with potential attackers, let them know what they are up against.

“Shout and scream as loud as you can. This is also worth doing even if there is no-one else nearby, as it will probably unnerve your assailants and frighten them off.

“You are allowed to use reasonable force to defend yourself - but don’t be a hero. It’s better just to have something taken than to be beaten up as well.”
