“The Met launched a new comprehensive website on Wednesday (Dec 5) to explain to victims of rape and sexual assault what their options are.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Mydecision.co.uk has been created as a step-by-step guide for anyone who has, or knows someone who has, been raped or sexually assaulted.

As well as explaining every step of the police process in detail, it also offers choices, advice and links to other support organisations the Met works in partnership with.

Research looking at barriers to reporting found some commonly held myths and fears.

In particular, it highlighted there was a lack of awareness about what support was available, and that victims feared losing control of what happened after they reported to police.

The site was therefore created with the purpose of raising awareness of all the services and support options available, from independent agencies as well as police, and dispelling myths.

We know that rape and serious sexual assault remains seriously under-reported which means that far too many people are suffering in silence.

We are absolutely committed to changing this by equipping individuals with the knowledge and awareness of ALL the options available to them should the worst happen.

Victims may be unaware of what help is out there for them and could be apprehensive about speaking with the police for fear they will have no control over the ensuing police process.

Mydecision.co.uk will play a key role in helping victims get the support they need and assisting them in taking a positive step on their journey to speaking out.

Every case is different. I want to encourage victims to come forward regardless of the circumstances so they can receive the relevant care and support.

To raise awareness of the mydecision.co.uk, a radio and online advertising campaign will run in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

It will be supported by a week of ‘myth busters’ on Twitter and Facebook, and a Cover It Live webchat with DCS Mick Duthie and a Sexual Offences Investigative Techniques (SOIT) officer.

You can visit mydecision.co.uk. Hear the radio advertisements and read more about the campaign here: http://content.met.police.uk/Campaign/mydecision.”
