Reverend Brian Shipsides, 56, of Claremont Road, Forest Gate, presided over the weddings, involving west African migrants, at the All Saints Church in Forest Gate between December 2007 and July 2010.

He was arrested by officers from the UK Border Agency in August 2010 following an investigation into a number of suspicious ceremonies at the church.

In April Shipsides was sentensed to four-and-a-half years imprisonment at Inner London Crown Court.

Last Friday (Nov 23) a judge at the same court ruled that the value of Shipsides’ criminal conduct amounted to £29,382.

Shipsides was suspended by the Diocese following his arrest but continued to receive a stipend until his removal from the post in May.

The stipend was reduced by £18,589 to help recover wedding fees he had retained but not declared.

The judge ordered Shipsides to pay the balance of £10,792 within the next six months or face a further six months imprisonment.
