It was on April 21 between 3pm-4pm that he called at her home in Upton Lane. He claimed to be from the water board.

The crook flashed an ID and entered the home before the woman could stop him.

He was in the property for about 30 minutes and tried various taps before he left.

Shortly after, the victim and her brother noticed that cash she had in the house was missing.

The suspect is described as white, aged 30 to 40, with a London accent.

Crime prevention officer Andy Whitfield said: “Bogus callers can be very convincing, but the bottom line is don’t be fooled.”

He added: “When you answer the door leave the chain on so the person at the door can’t force their way past you.

“Check their ID if you are still not convinced. You can call the company and check with them. If it doesn’t check out don’t let them in.”

n Police are appealing for anyone with information about this crime to contact Newham Burglary Squad on (020) 8217 5085 or, to remain anonymous, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
