Working on the transformation of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park has led to one Newham apprentice being named the apprentice of the year.

Leanne Doig was one of four young people to win an outstanding achievement award in the category at the first Mayor’s Fund for London awards.

She worked for K10 as part of their legacy apprentice scheme, where she helped to dismantle the basketball arena and work on the velodrome.

As a construction operative apprentice, she is a keen and passionate worker who regularly identifies risks on the site.

She is the only apprentice to sit on the Beyond Zero leadership group and has helped to raise the profile of women in constructions.

Leanne said: “To find such a good apprenticeship is a very big opportunity.

“In the future I want my own company and have loads of women working for me.

“We need equal opportunities because a lot of companies say women can’t do things – but we need to show them that we can.”

Since completing her apprenticeship, Leanne has become employed by BAM Nuttall and she is now completing her NVQ Level 2 on the Crossrail project.
