Cody Dock plans granted funding extension

A project to regenerate the neglected Cody Dock in Canning Town has been allowed more time to raise funds.

The Gasworks Dock Partnership charity has mounted a high-profile campaign in order to raise £140,000 by June 6 in order to complete work on the area before the start of the Olympic Games.

But they are still £40,000 short, despite vocal support from actor David Suchet and East Ham MP Stephen Timms.

However, Spacehive.com, the funding platform by which they hope to attract plenty of small donations, has granted a 30-day funding extension.

The decision was prompted by a plea from Lord Mawson, a member of the London Legacy Development Corporation board.

He said: “Cody Dock is a golden opportunity to deliver a major legacy project cheaply in time for the Games.

“Unlocking Cody Dock - the final block in a 26-mile walk along the banks of the River Lea - will open up London’s hidden second river for everyone to enjoy.

“I urge anyone who wants to see this neglected corner of the capital opened up for generations to enjoy to step up and pledge a contribution.”

Around £60,000 has been raised for the 2.5 acre scheme project so far. It would be the first revamp of the raw Lower Lea Valley.

It will feature tranquil gardens and wildlife habitats, surrounded by a metallic jungle of gas holders, pipework, and distant skyscrapers.

A new swingbridge will also allow walkers and cyclists to cross the dock.

Mr Timms has said the project will help to revive Newham if it goes ahead as planned.

“Cody Dock is a hidden gem,” he said.

“Bypassed by successive regeneration initiatives, it is now set to be transformed into a vibrant, creative place, generating dozens of jobs.”
