Staff at the East Ham branch of Halifax are donating 27 food hampers along with at least 100 gifts for children and adults to Newham food bank in time for Christmas.

The initiative, set up at the bank in High Street North, has been taken up by 10 other branches across east London who also set up collection points in there stores to take donations over the last two weeks.

“We wanted to do a bit extra coming up to Christmas.

“At this time of year there’s lots of people who are struggling — the cost of living keeps rising but people don’t get anymore income,” said East Ham branch customer advisor Paul Taylor.

“We just thought it would be nice to help out where we can and give something back to the community.”

The donations, which included a PS3 complete with games, were wrapped up on December 6 before being sent on for wider distribution.

As well as East Ham branches including Stratford, Plaistow, Bethnal Green, Kingsland, Leyton, Leytonstone, Hackney, Stoke Newington and Walthamstow collected donations.
