A Canning Town bar has had its licence revoked following a series of violent assaults on the premises.

Pier One Nightspot and Grill, in Bidder Street, has been the scene of eight assaults since August last year.

On one occasion, a suspect who had been drinking at the African/Afro-beat venue drove his vehicle at members of the public, lost control and hit the victim on the ankle.

In another, a victim was hit on the head with a glass or bottle, resulting in an eye injury.

As a result of Newham Council’s decision to revoke the licence, the bar will be unable to serve alcohol, provide entertainment or serve light hot food or refreshments between 11pm and 5am.

The council says the decision was made on the grounds of public safety and to prevent public nuisance, crime and disorder, following a request by the Metropolitan Police to review the licence.

The venue’s Facebook page describes the bar as having a reputation built on “diversity and willingness to satisfy our audience with the best sound and customer care service” with “friendly staff, a trendy crowd and enough going on to keep you entertained and coming back for more”.

Councillor Ian Corbett, chair of the committee, said: “The growing number of violent incidents at Pier One is unacceptable and for the safety of the public, it is crucial this venue’s licence is withdrawn”.

“The police have told us the level of violence and the frequency of these offences are disproportionate to other similar and well-managed venues in Newham.

“We will not tolerate crime and anti-social behaviour at licensed venues and this should be a lesson to all licensees that they need to be responsible and ensure their premises do not become a magnet for dangerous and illegal behaviour.”

The owners of the bar have been contacted for a comment.
