Rush hour at Canning Town station could soon become a lot easier to navigate after an application was made to create a new entrance.

The Rotunda building by Bow Creek will be upgraded and brought back into life as a station entrance.

If approved, it will see a new entrance canopy, gate, security fence and an information panel installed at the busy station, which is served by Tubes, the DLR and buses.

There will also be step-free access from the concourse to the platforms.

The Rotunda building was initially built in the 1990s when the station was constructed, but is currently used only by Crossrail construction workers.

If approved, the new entrance will provide a better link to the London City Island development, which will feature more than 1,700 homes and 4,500sq m of office space.

The design and access statement claims: “This is a modest upgrade of an existing structure which will provide significant public benefits to new developments and the local community.”

A separate planning application to develop the surrounding area will include a bid for bicycle stands to be used by those joining or leaving public transport at the station.
