In a joint letter to Transport for London they argue that The Silvertown Road Tunnel and new crossing at Gallions Reach would increase traffic, congestion and pollution in the surrounding roads.

The letter warns that providing new crossings principally for motor traffic would undermine the significant benefits accrued from 20 years of investment and support for public transport, walking and cycling.

The letter is signed by the Campaign for Better Transport, Living Streets, London Cycling Campaign, London Sustrans and the National Cycling Charity.

TfL’s Managing Director of Planning, Michele Dix, said: “New river crossings in east London are crucial to manage the increase in traffic that a growing population and economy will bring. Improving the highway network will help reduce the time vehicles spend queuing and should reduce vehicle emissions.”
