Thousands of bargain hunters were at the shopping centre this afternoon when several fights reportedly broke out.

A male has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon following the disturbance at around 2.30pm.

Scores of shoppers took to Twitter with one woman tweeting: “if your not desperate for a bargain, avoid it... lots of gangs and fights!!!”

Another shopper said: “Please avoid Westfield Stratford shopping centre big chaos going on because of gang fight”.

A third tweet said: “westfield stratford was a madness today was convinced i was gonna die”.

Mobile phone footage captured by another shopper shows police and security guards guiding people out of the centre.

A Met Police spokesman said: “Police were called to reports of disturbances at Westfield Stratford City.

“Officers attended and additional high-visibility patrols were deployed, and groups causing the disorder were dispersed.

“A male was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon. He was taken to an east London police station.”

Officers are currently at the scene.
