Boris Johnson urges Newham pensioners to claim pension credits and other benefits

London Mayor Boris Johnson is urging pensioners not to miss on pension credits as around 6,000 in Newham fail to claim benefits.
Across the capital 200,000 pensioners, or 20 per cent of pensioners, live in poverty.
More than 30,000 carers in London are also not taking up benefits they are entitled to and are estimated to be missing out on up to £58.45 a week in Carers’ Allowance.
In Newham Around 6,000 pensioners are missing out on an extra £35 a week, or £1,800 a year, in benefits.
Mr Johnson, said: “As temperatures plummet many households face extra pressure on their budgets as their fuel bills increase. I would urge pensioners to pick up the phone and make one simple call to check they are receiving all the financial support they are entitled to.”
Mr Johnson was made as part of the ‘Know Your Rights’ campaign.
Older people and carers can call Age UK on 0800 169 6565 or their local Citizens Advice Bureaux for a benefits check. Carers can also contact their local carers’ centre for information.
