Beckton hospice supporters’ favourite Olympic moments

15:00 02 September 2012

Supporters of Richard House Children’s Hospice took part in an online poll of the best Olympic moments in conjunction with The Independent.

The Coxless Four including Stephen Redgrave (2000) was voted the most popular Olympic moment.

The Beckton-based children’s hospice ran the poll in the build up to, and during, the London 2012 Games. There was also a series of articles on The Independent website and a series of videos.

Fans of the Richard House Facebook page, www.facebook.com/richardhousech chose from 10 Olympic moments including star performances from the likes of Sebastian Coe, Audley Harrison, Tessa Sanderson and Jonathan Edwards.

The Coxless Four’s victory in 2000 was the clear winner, with the GB Hockey Team’s 1998 Olympic performance in second place. Tessa Sanderson came in third place in the poll.

Niall Couper, spokesman for Richard House Children’s Hospice, said: “It was great fun creating this Olympic moments series to highlight the work here at Richard House to support children suffering with life-limiting, life-threatening illnesses and complex healthcare needs and their families.

“At Richard House we are all about creating positive memories, so this was a great way to celebrate our ethos and the London 2012 Olympic Games. Thanks to everyone who took part.”

As well as backing from The Indpendent, local sporting groups also got behind the initiative with Old Loughtonians Hockey Club, from Essex, helping the hospice recreate one Olympic Gold medal win.
