Broadcaster and writer Anita Sethi is chairing a series of events to mark the opening of University Square, Birkbeck College’s new east London campus at Stratford.
Artists, writers, academics and creative entrepreneurs are thrashing out the impact of change on their world when three public debates are staged during September.
The events kick-off on September 11 with a compilation video on “the rich mix of east London on film” through the ages, with a discussion by panellists including Create London’s Hadrian Garrard, iCity’s Gavin Poole, architect Amica Dall, Newham Bookshop’s Vivian Archer and Fabian Commission’s Alvin Carpio. The two-hour debate is at Stratford Picturehouse in Salway Road at 6.30pm.
A debate on how the character of east London is represented through the arts and media is staged at Stratford Circus in Theatre Square on September 18, at 6.30om, with panellists such as Guardian columnist Hugh Muir, Birkbeck historian Professor Jerry White, writer Stella Duffy, actor Jimmy Akingbola, Royal Opera’s Freddie Opoku-Addaie and comedian-actor-writer Andi Osho.
The third debate on whether audiences enjoy east London’s creative economy is staged at the Theatre Royal Stratford East on September 23 at 6.30pm, with panellists including The Legacy List’s Sarah Weir, London 2012 Festival curator Ruth McKenzie, UP Projects curator Emma Underhill, Theatre Royal’s Kerry Michael and Hackney Wick Yard Theatre’s Jay Miller.
