The legacy of the Olympics is often thought of as world-class competitions and grass-roots sports participation.

But what about business, jobs and innovation?

The creation of east London’s newest data and technology centre is almost complete, right in the heart of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Home to 20,000 journalists during the 2012 Games through its former life as the International Broadcast Centre, Here East is set to create up to 7,500 new jobs across the industries of fashion, art, technology and innovation.

The 1.2millionsq foot site is expected to house about 40 different companies with the idea of linking smaller, start-up companies with larger more-established businesses.

“Our values are rooted in securing a strong Olympic legacy,” said Here East chief executive Gavin Poole.

“As part of that, we are dedicated to ensuring that the local community benefit from Here East through training, employment and education opportunities.

“Over 7,500 jobs will be created, including 5,300 directly on-site and a further 2,200 in the local community, through the impact of using local supply chains and new business generation.”

Plans are also in place to create a retail district down by the Lee Canal, a 950-seat theatre and a even a series of special outdoor film screenings to take place in meeting and eating quarter.

“With Olympicopolis and now Here East there’s something big going on here and we’re going to be seeing a big ripple effect,” said brand and community director Helen Fisher.

Education could be key for the success of the hub and 300 postgraduate students will begin studying at the Loughborough University in London campus from next month – a post-graduate centre for specialist research.

Working with Hackney Community College, the institution will also offer a series of innovative training programmes through an extension of Tech City Apprenticeships.

UCL will also take possession of 3,000sq m of studio space for research into architecture, infrastructure, and robotics among other things from next year.

Although much of the plots remains unsold – the official marketing launch is not until early next year, when construction nears completion – BT Sport have been operating out of the site since their launch in 2013.

One of the UK’s leading sports television channels, their hub boasts the world’s largest LED-lit television studios and the biggest TV studio in the UK.
