Construction of the International Quarter, a new £1.3 billion commercial district in Stratford is expected to start in April next year.

Lend Lease and London & Continental Railways have secured ownership of the site from the Olympic Delivery Authority.

The companies said they were also in discussion with commercial occupiers with a view to them moving in from 2015. But they are seeking organisations to hold events in the site from January.

It is hoped the district, one of the largest in Europe, will create up to 25,000 jobs.

Mark Dickinson, from Lend Lease, said: “The International Quarter will become a vibrant new commercial hub within London.

“This is what legacy is all about.

“It will be a major contributor to London’s growth after the Games.

“Interim use is a key target for us and we are looking to attract early investment in the form of exhibitions and events in the New Year.”

When complete, the International Quarter will provide four million sq ft of flexible workplace, 350 new homes, a new hotel and convenience retail.
