Strike Jermain Defoe to return to England Euro 2012 Squad
England and Spurs striker Jermain Defoe is expected to rejoin England’s Euro 2012 squad tomorrow after flying home to London yesterday following the death of his father.
Beckton-born Jermain flew home from the team’s training base in Krakow following the sudden death of his father Jimmy, who lived in Forest Gate.
Jermain is likely to be named among the substitutes for England’s opening game against France in Donetsk on Monday.
England spokesman Mark Whittle said that Defoe should be back in time to be available for selection for England’s opening Group D fixture. He is expected to be selected as an impact substitute.
Jermain published a message of thanks to his well-wishers via his Twitter account on Friday.
He said: “I want to thank the fans, my family, friends, the England boys, the FA and manager for their support. I can’t tell you how much it means to me. I love you all, may God bless you. A special thank you to Royal Marsden’s doctors & nurses who looked after my dad. Very special people.”
