An over-60s choir have hit the jackpot, thanks to a grant from a casino.

Newham Super Choir, based at Beckton’s Community Centre, received £8,476 from Aspers Casino’s Good Cause Fund, enabling them to perform a trio of concerts over the coming year.

But despite the unorthodox source of income, choir leader Sovra Newman insists there are no concerns.

“We can’t afford to be judgemental,” she said. “We’ve received a grant from the National Lottery before and ultimately there’s not a huge amount of difference.”

The group formed in 2006 for a one-off performance but have since gone from strength to strength, with rehearsals every Tuesday morning.

The first of the choir’s 2014 dates will be a free concert at Forest Gate’s Durning Hall on Saturday, February 7.

But as well as public performances, the singers also plan to take their music out into the borough, allowing others to explore their hidden musical gifts.

“We have worked really hard to find a suitable grant,” explains choir member Martin Bates.

“We wanted one that would take us to another level and allow us to go out the community and prove that singing is for everyone.”
