The saying goes “like mother, like daughter” but a newly-elected Wall End councillor has followed in the footsteps of her daughter.

Frances Clarke, 59, says she was encouraged to stand by her daughter Ellie Robinson, 27, who was re-elected as councillor for Forest Gate North for a second term on Friday.

“My daughter really encouraged me because I saw what she had achieved and that inspired me and made me think that it was a good thing to do,” Frances said. “I saw it as a way that you can get things done, because Ellie has proved that it is an effective way of getting change in the community.”

As someone who has been heavily involved with charity Community Links for more than three decades, Frances says becoming a councillor felt like the next logical step - adding that is nice to encourage the next generation of female councillors.

“It is unusual that we are a mother and daughter team, as usually it is fathers and sons who go into politics, and usually the mother comes first,” Frances said.

“At the polling station we had women coming up to us and saying that they would like to get more involved and how nice it was to see women being active as it made them think it was something that they could do and that politics isn’t just a male domain.”

But Ellie, who helped her mum leaflet and canvass in the run-up to polling day, said Frances inspired her in the first place.

“It was my mum who helped me get into politics in the first place and realise that I can make a difference and add value to people’s lives,” she said.
